Description
Here we have anEarly Antique W & L. E. GURLEY, TROY, NY Brass Surveyor's Vernier Compass for REPAIR or RESTORATION.
William Gurley and Lewis Ephraim Gurley worked for other scientific instrument makers first before the brothers opened their own scientific instrument making firm in 1852 and began trading as W. & L. E. Gurley, They were soon the largest manufacturer of complex mathematical engineering and surveying instruments in the United States and operated until approx. 1923. Gurley instruments are very hard to date but their are a few key changes that do help. Serial numbers were no added to their instruments until after 1908. In 1880 Gurley switched from hand engraved face plates with fancier script to mechanical pantograph for engraving. Also, "Troy NY" was moved to the North position. Since there is no serial number and "Troy, NY' is located in the 'South position' I'm estimating that this instrument was made prior to 1880. This instrument has a good, fully working 5" diameter compass dial with a working needle lift adjustment on the bottom. Only one of the spirit bubble vials has survived. There is an attachment missing on the body where there are 3 holes. It has two 7" tall removable sighting vanes. One of these has a break at the bottom and needs to be braised/welded.
I
The instrument has a fully functional bottom fitting for attachment to a tripod or Jacob's shaft. The instrument has not been tinkered with or cleaned and still has the original aged brass patina. There are no breaks in the body or the glass face of the compass dial. The instrument is 12-1/2" long. It weighs4 lbs. (unpacked). I offer FREE Local Pickup.
