Description
This is an antique alidade of French design and manufacture, circa mid to late 1800s. It was made by Travernier-Gravet of Paris, a company most famous for its slide rules. It's a type of transit used for accurately measuring distances whether on flat or sloped ground. While it could serve as a general-use transit, it was intended mainly for military use when setting up artillery. On the back is a paper label with complete instructions for its use (in French of course). The top line, translated, reads:
Instructions for the alidade leveler perfected by the captain of the "genie" [militia] of the [Province of] Goulier
The alidade measures 9.25 inches long. It is all complete and in excellent working condition. Nothing is missing; in fact, this has an extra mounting bracket on the back that most versions of this alidade don't have.
