    Description

    Early Tape Measure
Octagonal case some 3" across contains a cloth tape measure (linen?) marked in feet and inches on one side (total length 18ft 6ins) and in links on the other side. The casing is made out of leather-covered wood (a chip on one edge reveals the wood) and the tape has a folding brass handle and brass rollers etc. for the tape to pass over. No makers mark; the handle is stamped "40" and there is the remains of a paper label with presumably the name and address of the original owner (I can discern "Stainmore", an area in Cumbria).
