    Betty Smith (Elisabeth Wehner) was an American author best known for her novel
    "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," published in 1943. It was popular with both critics and
    the public alike. Released in 1945 as a film, directed by Elia Kazan. Her later books,
    "Tomorrow Will be Better," "Maggie-Now," and "Joy in the Morning," were not
    as successful.
