    Description

Here we have for sale is this  outstanding rare antique JOHANN WILLEBRAND gilt brass and silvered UNIVERSAL EQUINOCTIAL DIAL, Augsburg, circa 1700,
signed "Johann Willebrand (ca. 1658-1726) in Augsburg.
The octagonal dial raised on 3 bun feet and mounted with hinged plum bob in pierced surrounding hour ring, latitude arc and gnomon 2" x 2 1/4" (5 x 5.5 cm) in a fitted leather covered case.
We believe the circa to be between 1700-1726.

the names and latitudes of European towns engraved to the bottom of the compass.
The hour scales (silver hour band set in gilt-brass ring with engraved floral motif) graduated from 3-12 ad 1-9, the latitude arc from 20 to 90 degrees, the compass with blued steel needle with abbreviations of the cardinal directions S/E (Septentrio for North), M/E (Meridies for South). O/R (Oriens for East) and O/C (Occidens for West), subdivided to the quarter-hour, gilt-brass gnomon, engraved hand pointer for latitude, shaped gilt-brass latitude arc). The ring, the latitude arc and the plumet support are finely engraved and show a great amount of workmanship.
All in a leather case with silk lining and a brass hook.
Johann Mathias Willebrand (around 1658-1726) was a Mechanicus and watchmaker in Augsburg, Germany, where he began and worked by his stepbrother Johann Martin from 1682 on. From 1703 on he opened shop on his own and built watches, sundials and astronomical instruments on the highest level.
