Today, July 14th, is the first day since approximately March 2003 that this magazine has seen the light of day. It's been bagged and boxed for over 18 years. Another interesting tidbit, forgot where I read it late last night, but supposedly only 2% of the newsstand SIs survived the chop shop. Or perhaps that was any newsstand magazine?Either way, they are getting tougher and tougher to find now that they are being graded and encapsulated.
This issue is from the JJ Teaparty Collectibles buy. A beautiful collection of Sports Illustrated magazines, all Newsstand issues from 1954 through 1966. There were subscription issues from 1967 on through 1975 from the same collector, with a smattering of newsstand issues in there as well. A few notable ones that I will be listing over the next several weeks.
As I stated in other listings, this guy collected every issue and looks as though he never even opened these magazines. Really nice stuff. Anyway....I sold this identical Kaline-Kuenn magazine a few days ago, but that issue was purchased at one of the shows I attended in Chantilly, VA. This one is much, much nicer.
May 14, 1956 Sports Illustrated, Al Kaline and Harvey Kuenn Detroit Tigers on the cover, NO LABEL newsstand issue, unread condition. The spine is very tight, the staples are intact, there are no loose pages, no creases, no folded pages, no water stains, no signs of paper exposed to humidity, no writings, rips nor torn pages inside.
There are a few spots worth mentioning. Stress marks at the middle and top staples, then there is a very thin line of something that has dried on there. Maybe some adhesive, I don't know. Perhaps it happened during the production process or when it was on the newsstand shelf. When I purchased these I certainly did not go through and inspect every one of them. I remember being there for around 10 minutes and handed over the cash they looked so good.
