    Description

Struck in france to help solve a coin shortage in the french colonies.
These stampees also circulated in the British west indies .
This specimen was struck over a previously issued French sou marque, minted at the Paris Mint.
The sou marque undertype is a very worn coin yet you can still see traces of it where there is a coloration
difference on the crowned C side.
In colonial times, a coin's value was determined by the weight of the coin, so
the Paris Mint benefited by using underweight (used) coins as blanks.
You are looking at a Vlack #374 variety, listed as a Rarity-6 on page 140 of An Illustrated Catalogue of the French Billon
    Coinage In The Americas.
The more common stampees are Vlack #375, "struck over a blank planchet, either billon
    or copper." These are Rarity-2.
