    Description

1755 American Beaver Token Very Scarce Betts-390 SHARP
This is a very tough to get token with direct North American connection. It is listed as Betts-390. He describes is as follows:
Obv. LUD. XV. REX CHRISTIANISS. Under decollation f / m in script. Bust of Louis in lion's skin, to the right; hair tied with a bow.
Rev. NON VILIUS AUREO. In exergue, COL. FRANC, DE | LAM. 1755. (Not less valuable than the golden: i. e., the peltry of the beavers was not less to be desired than the golden fleece sought by Jason, to which the galley alludes.) Ancient galley, from the top of which hangs a beaver pelt.
Our specimen shows sharp beaver, which is the key to this issue (see photos for condition). Many out there barely show any details of this beaver, while others show no details at all. Why buy a beaver token if you can't even see it? Ours has nice brown color and surfaces. It's a very nice example of this issue. This token is one of the key North American issues from the 18th century struck during the French-Indian War that circulated in Canada and upstate New York.
