    Description

    Edward Vernon, a Tory back-bencher, who rose in the Commons and boasted that
    he could take Porto Bello, the key to the Spanish defences in the Western Hemisphere, “with six
    ships only.” In early 1739, he got his six ships and proceeded to make good his boast. Shortly after many different varieties of medals were made to commemorate his incredible achievement, and this is an example of one such medal.
