Parliament at a tikanga ‘crossroads’ – Te Pāti Māori

Opposition parties that took part in the Treaty principles haka are using the coming week to refine their pitch to the Speaker of the House in the hope of successfully embedding tikanga in the debating chamber.
The fiery first reading of the Treaty Principles Bill has highlighted where Parliament currently stands on haka and how it is used as part of debate. Now, those on the left are calling for the Speaker to use this opportunity to change those rules in a way they believe allows for a better – and more principled – representation of tikanga and culture.
